I International Young Graphic Biennale
„Prima Septembris – Against Hatred” Wrocław 2009

The idea of the exhibition
On the occasion of the commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the outbreak of the Second World War, young artists representing the nations speaking different languages will meet at the special exhibition of the I International Young Graphic Biennale „Prima Septembris – Against Hatred” Wrocław 2009 by means of the images – visualization of our longings, fears and hope.

For the whole of Europe and large part of the world the 1st September 1939 became a synonym for destruction and extermination. At the same time the beginning of the World War II is the beginning of divisions, hatred and atrocities.

From the map of Europe several cultures inhabiting those lands for hundreds years have been erased. Neighbours have been set at variance, many people were deprived of their history. After the end of the war the process of spreading the hatred and aversion began. This deepened the already-existing animosities and even today hinders establishing the dialogue and understanding. Through the exhibition we want to try to understand what about that past and present world young people from different countries think and speak.
Graphics is a technique of arduous transferring onto the matrix of artistic ideas. Its expression is based on the contract of white and black – the juxtaposition of two colours. Apparently having no chances to communicate, yet jointly building the coherent vision.

The exhibition „Prima Septembris” chooses as its target to connect people of different cultures together on the day, which historically is considered as the date of the division, symbol of severance, abandoning the foundations of humanism.
By means of the dialogue built up by means of  the art we want to make this date the symbol of reconciliation and understanding between the nations, the day „Against Hatred”.

Description of the exhibition
The biennal exhibition consists of 54 works, dimensions 70x100cm, entered by the students of the higher schools of fine arts from Israel, Germany, Poland and Russia. None of the works has ever been presented. The works have been made using one of the traditional graphic techniques (classic art techniques other than the print), only black-and-white and made in one author’s copy.

All works are thematically related to the idea of the exhibition and with the message to the present time: „Against Hatred”.
